Want Your Senior Dog To Be Sharp As A Tack? #BrightMind

When we adopted Phoebe in 2011, the shelter estimated her age to be approximately 3 years old.  It felt like in the blink of an eye suddenly she was  a senior dog!

Phoebe was always a feisty little dog and very smart, but as she got older I noticed some changes in her.  It's like she wasn't as.... sharp as she used to be.  My Husky Icy, on the other hand, is two years younger and was always sharper and quicker, especially when learning new things.

Sometimes I felt bad for Phoebe when we played games with treats.  Icy was right on it but Phoebe needed some coaching and a bit more time to "get it" and join in.  By that time Icy had usually gotten nearly all of the treats!

How do we play this game again?

Don't get me wrong, I think senior dogs totally ROCK, but sometimes they rock a little slower!  According to the experts at Purina Pro Plan®, around age seven the glucose metabolism in a dog's brain begins to change.  That can have a negative impact on a dog's:

** MEMORY
** LEARNING
** AWARENESS
** DECISION MAKING

This actually made me breathe a sign of relief, at least I know the changes I was seeing in my dogs as they age are normal!

If you have a senior dog who isn't quite as sharp as his or her younger self, don't worry!  I have some great news to share with you.

Purina Pro Plan has discovered a way to promote alertness and mental sharpness in senior dogs, 7 years and older, through nutrition with BRIGHT MIND Adult 7+®  dog food formulas.  I love the idea of achieving improvement in my dog's mental sharpness through quality nutrition!

> BRIGHT MIND 7+ was created with enhanced botanical oils shown to promote alertness and mental sharpness in dogs 7 and older, with visible results in 30 days.  When added to the daily diet of dogs 7 years and older, formulas that contained enhanced botanical oils promoted memory, attention and trainability.

> BRIGHT MIND 7+  contains glucosamine to help support joint health and mobility.

> BRIGHT MIND 7+ contains vitamin A and linoleic acid for healthy skin and coat.

> BRIGHT MIND 7+ contains high quality protein as the first ingredient!

These are all really important for an aging dog!

Purina Pro Plan BRIGHT MIND 7+ promotes alertness and mental sharpness in dogs 7 years and older

By feeding Phoebe and Icy a daily diet of Purina Pro Plan BRIGHT MIND I hoped to see some positive changes:

** I hope to see more of an interest in interaction and play.

** I'd like to see Icy catch on to new games and other things as quickly as she used to, so she doesn't feel frustrated.

** I'm hoping to see a continued interest and enjoyment in our adventures.

We've always loved Pro Plan. I really hate to think that Wynston is almost 5 and before I know it, he will be a "senior." I have a small bag of Bright Mind and I use the kibble as treats. I don't have senior dogs but I like what the food has to offer, so I use it when we play games and such. All my babies love it!

We really like Pro Plan too, especially the canned varieties. I'm anxious to see how Phoebe does on Bright Mind. She really loves the taste! Thanks for stopping by Amanda!

I wonder if it's different for small dogs due to their longer lifespan. Mr. N turned seven last year but I haven't noticed any changes. I hope the food helps!

Layla is a 9 year old 15 lbs of fun, and I am sticking to her diet and not changing anything because of her allergies, I would rather be safe than sorry :)

I'm so happy that Phoebe is in such loving care. Feeding our best friends a great diet is so important especially as they age.

Phoebe sure doesn't look like a senior! Our kitties are all young - so its a little while before we have to think about the special dietary and other considerations for seniors.

It's great that Mr. N is still sharp! If you notice changes in the future you may want to give Bright Mind a try. Thanks for stopping by!

If her current diet is working great for her I'm glad.

Thank you MK! Feeding is really important, they are our best friends & fur babies! Thanks for stopping by!

I know right!? She still looks to me as the day we adopted her. I still can't believe she's a senior pup now! I hope your kitties stag healthy for years to come.

You are such a photogenic doggie! My sisters doggie is now a senior and we've noticed a little change in his behavior so we may check this out for him.

Great post. Keira is a senior too and I worry about her diet, actually I worry about everything pertaining to her. She's starting to slow down and sleep more... It makes me pause, and makes me sad...

Phoebe is such a darling! She deserves the best nutrition possible.

Mary is on the same food. I have also purchased some of the wet entrees as she picky that way and wants it mixed together. I'm am really looking forward to her being a little my social, perhaps a little more playful and maybe not needed so much coaching on those puzzle games. We soon will see :-)

Great post! I was just reading about this and am very interested to see how Phoebe does. I hope it helps with her stress (interesting point!) and with her playing with Icy. Looking forward to the follow up post with an update!

Phoebe looks great! She is super cute. I love that Purina is taking an aging dog's nutritional needs into mind. As pet owners, we need to feed our pets their whole life long, not just when they are young! Senior pets are pawsome! :)

We really like Pro Plan here. I hope the new food helps Phoebe catch on to new games faster. I look forward to reading an update about her later.

Gracie is not quite a senior yet, she is 8 1/2 years old, but I feed her a quality food as well. She not only looks young, but acts it as well! Most people meet her and think she is only 3 or 4 years old! Feeding a quality food throughout your dog's life can really change how they age in their senior years.

Thanks for the kind words! I worry about my senior girl too. It is sad that they just don't have the lifespan people do. This food has some great ingredients, you may want to give it a try for Keira.

Aww, thanks! She is such a good girl, I think she deserves the best of everything!

I like to mix dry food with wet food as well so I bought some of the Bright Mind wet food too. It looks great & Phoebe loves it! I'm hoping to see good results for Phoebe too.
