Hey friends, I know the holidays are almost here and we're all feeling a bit giddy and jolly anticipating lots of fun, decadent foods, pretty decorations & lights, and PRESENTS! But I just want to take a bit of time to remind dog owners and cat owners about FIRE SAFETY FOR PETS.
I created this simple infographic with some sobering statistics about pets and house fires, what causes them, and how we can prevent them.

With the holidays comes a lot more extension cords, batteries (including lithium batteries), candles, electronic devices and toys, and more cooking on the stove and in the oven.
So as you're planning for all the fun you and your pets will have this holiday season, please take a moment to think about how you'll prevent a potential fire in your home. Especially fires that are accidentally caused by our pets!
I wish all of you and your furry, feathered, and scaly pets a Happy and Safe holiday season. I'm so grateful for all of you!

Great article, Cathy! Fire is so scary. I remember my house burned down the ground (even the glass melted) when I was a kid on Dec. 23. We all got out. My pup got his ears slightly burned. I still can't light a match. But I'm here to tell the story and tell you that because our house was the worst in the town's history, my mom started a petition and got another fire station. Definitely always be careful around fire. It can be absolutely devasting. Super article, Cathy!
I'm literally shocked by those statistics!! I can't believe how many pets are victims of fires, never mind how many fires are started by them. Thanks for the infographic and the reminder that while we're all looking forward to the holidays, we can't forget about safety.
Oh my goodness Terri, I can't even imagine how traumatic that must have been! Your Mom is a hero! I bet she saved some lives with her dedication & tenacity on getting a fire station.
I know, Hindy, I was shocked too! I actually checked a number of sources to verify those stats. It's easy to get caught up in the joy of the season and not realize that all the cords, electronics, batteries, etc can actually create potential dangers.
People NEED to be reminded. Christmas is coming, people get stressed and pet safety gets forgotten. THS is gold dust as a reminder for people!

Thank you for writing this very important article. It's relatively easy for dogs to accidentally start fires (cats too!) the results can be devastating. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so take the knobs off your oven before you leave and put out those candles!
My biggest fear is not being home and there is a fire, thank goodness they have installed a new fire alarm system in our building and I have a sign on my door that there is a dog inside. I have done everything in my house to child proof it as such so Nili cannot touch anything dangerous which is a fire hazard.
Excellent article, Cathy. Looking around I see all the cords and light wires and it's so important to keep them up out of our pets' way. When I had my FiveSibes, I always did a check, and they were so good...they just loved lying under the tree and watching the lights until they fell asleep. Warmed my heart! But I have had friends whose dogs got into tinsel and cats climb up the tree and got tangled in light wires and the tree came crashing down! I also did a story on a Husky who was rescued from a house fire...very, very scary. I hope everyone has a safe holiday season, and sharing this important reminder.
