DOG FRIENDLY GETAWAY IN HISTORIC RHINEBECK, NEW YORK

When the holidays roll around we know it's going to be a busy, stressful time so we try to plan an early pet friendly holiday getaway with the dogs.  We usually go the first few days of December, when holiday decorations are up but before the holiday crowds are in full swing.  For a few years now, our dog friendly holiday vacation has been a few days in the quaint upstate New York town of Rhinebeck.

QUAINT AND HISTORIC, RHINEBECK, NEW YORK IS A PEACEFUL GETAWAY

Rhinebeck has always been a wonderful place for us to get away and unplug, not too far from Manhattan or Long Island.  Our favorite place to stay is the Beekman Arms Inn.  The Beekman Arms, established in 1766, is dubbed the "Oldest Inn in America" and has quite an interesting history.   The hotel consists of several buildings, the most popular being the main Beekman Arms Inn and the Delamater House Inn.  We enjoy staying at both of these beautiful, charming properties.  We've stayed there many times but neither of these properties are a pet friendly hotel so we've had to leave the dogs at home.  😞

We love to vacation with our dogs, they are our family, so it was disappointing that we could never take them with us.  I understand why pets are not permitted in the main Beekman Arms Inn or the Delamater House because they are historic inns with upscale furnishings and antiques.  I really can't blame them for not wanting dogs or cats in those unique and special hotel rooms.

DOG FRIENDLY HOTEL IN RHINEBECK, NEW YORK

However, the Beekman Arms does have one building that allows pets, it's called the Guest House, and is described as a "motel style" hotel on property.  We were never able to find photos of this building or the pet friendly rooms online in the past, they just didn't have them which made us suspicious that they might be hideous. Recently though, we found a photo of a dog friendly room at the Guest House on the web site and it didn't look bad at all!  We decided to take a chance and book a dog friendly room in the Beekman Arm's pet friendly Guest House property.  We were pleasantly surprised.  It was a far cry from the beautifully appointed rooms of the main Beekman Inn and the Delamater House, but we really enjoyed staying there.  It was wonderful having our dogs with us in one of our favorite quaint upstate towns!

The Guest House at the Beekman Arms doesn't look like much from the outside.  It's definitely more "motel style", but it was clean and comfortable.  We were just so delighted to be able to finally bring our dogs with us to Rhinebeck!  There don't seem to be any other dog friendly lodgings in the town of Rhinebeck.  Here's a photo collage of our dogs Icy and Phoebe in our Guest House room.

GREAT WALKABILITY AND DOG FRIENDLY!

Having our dogs with us on our Rhinebeck getaway was great.  We loved being able to walk through this beautiful little town with Icy and Phoebe.  The sidewalks weren't too crowded and there were several places for both the dogs and us to enjoy together.

There's a lovely little park with a lake at one edge of town, which Icy and Phoebe loved exploring.  The lake runs off into a creek with a waterfall that was partially frozen. It was so pretty!

Just steps from our hotel room we discovered another great dog friendly park with a gravel walking path and a large grassy field.  Each morning and evening we went for nice long walks with the dogs here.  It must be gorgeous when it snows.  Unfortunately it's not an off leash area but we enjoyed it so much.

ENJOYING THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT IN RHINEBECK, NEW YORK

The town of Rhinebeck and the Beekman Arms hotel were beautifully decorated for the holidays. This wonderful antique sleigh stood right outside the Beekman Arms Inn so we took advantage of a photo op for Phoebe.  Too bad there wasn't any snow, maybe we could have gone for a sleigh ride!

At night the streets were all lit up with beautiful Christmas lights.  It was so nice to stroll through the town in the evening enjoying all the lights.

I love Broadway shows in New York City, but I really enjoy dinner theater too. Great food and a show at the same time - I love it! A wonderful theater company performed A Christmas Carol in dinner theater style and sang Christmas carols right in the Beekman Arms hotel.  We loved it!  The actors and singers were all so talented.  The little boy who played Tiny Tim was such a talent, I won't be at all surprised if I see that kid on broadway one day soon.

VISITING DOG FRIENDLY WINERIES ON LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK

If you've been reading our blog for awhile, you know that we love taking our dogs just about everywhere with us!  We're always looking for great dog friendly restaurants, dog friendly activities and other destinations that welcome dogs.  We have recently discovered some great Dog Friendly Wineries on Long Island, New York!

Long Island's Wine Country

Yes, Long Island, New York has a Wine Country and it's pretty darn good!  The sandy soil and moderate climate found on Long Island makes it ideal for growing grapes.  Although grapes have been grown and vines sold on Long Island since the late 1600's, according to the Long Island Wine Council the first Long Island Vineyard wasn't planted until 1973.

Upon visiting Long Island in 2,000, world renowned Australian viticulturist Dr. Richard Smart said that the soils of Long Island "are among the finest soils for grape growing that I have ever seen in the world"  Wow, that's quite a testament coming from a leading global consultant on viticulture methods!

Sandy soil and a moderate maritime climate are ideal for growing grapes that make the delicious wines of Long Island!

As you travel East on Long Island, the Island splits into two sections, the North Fork and the South Fork of the island.  This split begins at the town of Riverhead, about two thirds of the way to the Eastern end of the island.

The North Fork of the island is where most of the wineries are located in towns like Riverhead, Mattituck, Peconic, and Southold.  There are a couple of wineries on the South Fork as well, but the South Fork is better known for the beautiful regions of The Hamptons and Montauk.

Dog Friendly Wineries, North Fork Long Island

We've visited several vineyards on Long Island over the years, but this was the first time we visited wineries on Long Island that allow dogs!  It's the first time, but it will certainly not be the last.  We had a wonderful time at two of Long Island's pet friendly wineries, and so did our dogs, Icy and Phoebe!

For our first winery visits with the dogs we chose Pindar Vineyards  in Peconic and Macari Vineyards in Mattituck.  Visiting two wineries with dogs was plenty for one day.  We wanted to take our time and enjoy the wine and the beauty of the vineyards, and didn't want to tire the dogs out too much.  We'll be heading back out to visit a couple more pet friendly wineries on Long Island in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for that!

Dog Friendly Pindar Vineyards, Peconic, Long Island NY

Our first stop was Pindar Vineyards in Peconic.  I did a tasting of about 5 different wines (don't worry, the tasting size is super small!) and John had just one glass of wine since he was our driver.  We bought a couple of cheese sticks and a small package of crackers to enjoy along with our wine.

They had a covered patio with lots of shade and a beautiful view of the vineyards.  The gentle, cool breezes off the water were delightful!  I had brought chew sticks for the dogs, but of course we couldn't refuse sharing some of our cheese sticks with them too!

I really like Pindar's green initiatives, one of which is the use of wind in their wine production.  They installed a 156 foot tall Turbine that will power at least 80% of all winery operations.  We applaud their sustainability efforts!

There is a beautiful Sunflower Field on the property as well.  You can stroll through the field with a glass of wine in hand, admiring the bright, "happy" flowers.  You can even cut some sunflowers to take home for just a dollar or two per stem.  They provide the clippers, you choose & cut your flowers.

We left Pindar Vineyards with 2 bottles of wine in tow.  A bottle of Pythagoras red wine for my husband and a bottle of Winter White for me.  Delicious!!  

Dog Friendly Macari Vineyards, Mattituck, Long Island NY

Our next stop was Macari Vinyards in Mattituck.  I didn't do another tasting, instead I had a glass of a sparkling Cabernet that I really like and john had a glass of Merlot.

In addition to tasting flights, Macari offers a boxed cheese, cracker, and aged salami snack that you can enjoy with your glass or bottle of wine outside on the patio.  You can also buy these items a la carte.  

There was enough in the boxed "snack" to consider it lunch for two.  There was also enough cheddar cheese and salami left over for a delicious omelette du fromage the next morning!

Macari Vineyard offers a la carte or boxed snacks of cheeses, crackers, and aged Italian salami.  Yum!!

We enjoyed one of the boxed snacks with our wine on the covered patio overlooking the vineyard.  It was perfect, sipping wine and snacking on cheese and crackers while looking out over the beautiful vineyard.  The breezes that came off the Long Island Sound were so relaxing, even the dogs were loving the cool breezes!  

We made sure there was plenty of shade and kept the dogs well hydrated.  Of course, we had to share a little of our cheese and salami with the dogs!

The Macari Vineyard started in the 1990's. The Macari farm uses an ecological and holistic approach to growing their grapes.  That includes a field devoted entirely to compost, with a composting program that utilizes a herd of Long Horn Cattle and a couple of horses.

If you decide to visit wineries on Long Island, New York, there are lots of Long Island Vineyard Tours available.  I like the idea of a tour because you can visit several wineries and participate in wine tastings to your heart's content without having to worry about driving afterwards!  It's probably the safest way to do a wine tasting tour, don't you think?

DOG FRIENDLY NATIONAL PARKS

There are 60 national parks and over 10,300 state parks in the United States.  Together, they spread out across over 18 million acres! While the vast majority of them don’t allow dogs, there are a few that welcome our canine companions! Just remember that even the most dog-friendly national parks have rules about where you can take your dog. Make sure you learn and follow them, so these parks don’t have a reason to ban dogs entirely.

    Acadia National Park- Acadia National Park, established in 1919, is in the state of Maine, just southwest of Bar Harbor. The park sits on 49,075.26 acres and sees approximately 3,509,271 visitors annually. Arcadia National Park features an array of lakes, mountains, shorelines and woodlands.

   BadlandsNational Park- Badlands National Park, founded in 1978, is found in southwestern South Dakota, near Rapid City. The park sits on 242,755.94 acres and sees approximately 1,054,325 visitors annually. Several movies have been filmed in the Badlands National Park, including the 1990 Dances with Wolves, the 1997 Starship Troopers and the 2007 National Treasure: Book of Secrets.

   Cuyahoga Valley National Park- Cuyahoga Valley National Park, conceived in 2000, is based in northeastern Ohio, along the Cuyahoga River between Akron and Cleveland. The park sits on 32,572.35 acres and sees approximately 2,226,879 visitors annually. The national park features more than 125 miles of hiking trails, as well as an array of caves, rolling hills, waterfalls and winding rivers.

   Grand Canyon National Park- Grand Canyon National Park, originated in 1919, is set in northwestern Arizona, in Coconino and Mohave counties. The park sits on 1,201,647.03 acres and sees approximately 6,254,238 visitors annually. The park’s main feature is the Grand Canyon, a gorge that was carved out by the Colorado River.

   Great Sand Dunes National Park- Great Sand Dunes National Park, founded in 2004, is in south-central Colorado, in Alamosa and Saguache counties. The park sits on 107,341.87 acres and sees approximately 486,935 visitors annually. The national park is home to North America’s tallest sand dunes, reaching heights of 750 feet.

   Mammoth Cave National Park- Mammoth Cave National Park, formed in 1941, is situated in central Kentucky, in Barren, Edmonson and Hart counties. The park sits on 54,011.91 acres and sees approximately 587,853 visitors annually. The park surrounds parts of the Mammoth Caves, the world’s longest cave system, which measures 405 miles in length.

   North Cascades National Park- North Cascades National Park, created in 1968, is positioned in Washington, in Chelan, Skagit and Whatcom counties. The park sits on 504,780.94 acres and sees approximately 30,326 visitors annually. North Cascades National Park features an expansive glacial system, forested valleys, numerous waterways and rugged mountain peaks.

   Shenandoah National Park- Shenandoah National Park, established in 1935, is situated in Virginia, surrounding part of the state’s Blue Ridge Mountains. The park sits on 199,217.77 acres and sees approximately 1,458,874 visitors annually. Shenandoah National Park features some impressive waterfalls, ranging in height from 28 feet to 93 feet.

   Yosemite National Park- Yosemite National Park, founded in 1890 is set in California, in Madera, Mariposa and Tuolumne counties. The park sits on 761,747.50 acres and sees approximately 4,336,890 visitors annually. The world-renowned park is famous for its biological diversity, clear streams, granite cliffs and sequoia groves.

   Zion National Park - Zion National Park, conceived in 1919, is found in southwestern Utah, in Iron, Kane and Washington counties. The park sits on 147,237.02 acres and sees approximately 4,504,812 visitors annually. The park features 4 life zones: coniferous forest, desert, riparian and woodland.

DOG FRIENDLY STATE PARKS

Abilene State Park- Abilene State Park is in Taylor County, Texas. The 529.4-acre park features camping areas, hiking trails, picnic areas and a swimming pool.

Hot Springs State Park- Hot Springs State Park is in Hot Springs County, Wyoming. The 1,108.67-acre park features hot springs that constantly flow at a temperature of 135 degrees Fahrenheit.

Huntington Beach State Park- Huntington Beach State Park is in Georgetown County, South Carolina. The 2,500-acre park is popular for its large sandy beach and countless wild birds.

Itasca State Park- Itasca State Park is in Becker, Clearwater and Hubbard counties, within the state of Minnesota. The 32,690-acre park is home to more than 200 species of wild birds.

Lost Dutchman State Park- Lost Dutchman State Park is in Pinal County, Arizona. The 320-acre park is named after the legendary Lost Dutchman Gold Mines.

Oak Mountain State Park- Oak Mountain State Park is in Shelby County, Alabama. The 9,940-acre park is home to the Alabama Wildlife Center and the Oak Mountain BMX Track.

Tuttle Creek State Park- Tuttle Creek State Park is in the state of Kansas. The 1,200-acre park features an artificial beach, camping sites and nature trails.

Remember, the rules vary at each of these dog-friendly national and state parks, so make sure you take the time to learn them! We want to be considerate pet parents so we don’t ruin the fun for anyone else."

It will be so helpful in planning dog friendly vacations to National and State Parks.  I'm glad you included the point of following the individual rules for each of these parks, as they do vary and most have some restricted access for dogs.  One example is that Grand Canyon National Park allows dogs but they don't allow them to hike down the canyon with you, dogs must remain up on the rim.

DOG FRIENDLY RIVER WALK IN PENNSYLVANIA

On the way to and from the BlogPaws conference in Kansas City, we stopped off in the quiet, historic town of Lock Haven, Pennsylvania.  It's a very dog friendly little town with a beautiful river running through it.  The town is also home to Lock Haven University, a college with just under 4,000 students.

The William Clinger Riverwalk is a beautiful paved walkway that runs along the river for 2.25 miles.  The river is actually a levee that protects Lock Haven from the West Branch Susquehanna River. 

The Riverwalk is a nice long path that is very dog friendly and great for long walks.  We love visiting Lock Haven because the riverwalk offers a great way for both us and the dogs to get good exercise and take time to enjoy ourselves when we stop off during long road trips.  I would actually visit this dog friendly town for this beautiful riverwalk alone!

It's the end of Winter in these photos, but it's even more beautiful in Summer when all the trees have leafed out and bloomed.  I hope to visit in the Fall next time when the blazing colors of the Northeastern Fall foliage are in full swing.  I know that will be spectacular here!

HISTORIC TOWN, BEAUTIFUL ARCHITECTURE

Lock Haven isn't exactly a bustling town.  There are a few little shops and restaurants, but it's a very quiet little college town.   That's what we love about it.  It's peaceful and quiet, you can enjoy the riverwalk and lovely architecture without worrying about crowds or finding a place to park.

Some parts of the town seem kind of run-down, but there is still a lot of beauty to enjoy - especially that wonderful riverwalk!

WONDERFUL DOG FRIENDLY HOTEL IN LOCK HAVEN

During one of our cross country trips from Phoenix to New York we searched for a dog friendly hotel that was not too far from Interstate 80.  I was so fortunate to find a pet friendly Best Western hotel in the town of Lock Haven, Pennsylvania.  Finding this town and hotel were one of those happy accidents while planning a cross country road trip with two dogs! 

We've stayed at this Best Western hotel 4 times in the past couple of years and we love it.  The staff is so friendly and accommodating, and they definitely welcome their pet guests!

The rooms are updated, clean and very comfortable.  They offer free breakfast too.  The best thing about this hotel is that it's only a short walk from the hotel to the riverwalk.  We've enjoyed all our stays at this Best Western hotel, and will definitely return soon!  When I find a great hotel that really welcomes dogs I try to go back to it again and again on our many road trips with the dogs.

In Summer, Lock Haven has a lot of events that take place along the riverwalk, such as the free Summer concert series that takes place on a floating stage right on the river! 

We love visiting Lock Haven Pennsylvania, it truly is a haven, and a nice break from surrounding big cities like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia!

Dog Friendly Beach!

What's more fun than a dog friendly beach?!  I love seeing the dogs diving into the water, chasing after balls and frisbees, it's a blast!  They have so much fun.  We have a nice little dog friendly beach here in Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island.  It's mainly used by the local residents but the word has been spreading thanks to the internet.

Icy doesn't actually "swim" per se, but she is really starting to enjoy wading into the water up to her belly.  When there are a bunch of other dogs at the beach she gets very excited, her hesitation melts away and wants to join in!  

Icy likes to get up on the edge and watch the other serious water dogs dive in after balls and frisbees and marvel at how they swim!  She won't jump in from the edge, she will walk gingerly down the aluminum dock launch or walk in via the sandy beach.  I'm glad she doesn't dive in, it can be dangerous for any dog to dive in when the tide is low and the water is shallow. 

Look how much fun these dogs are having jumping into the water, swimming and chasing balls and frisbees!!  I hope Icy will one day join in with exuberance like these dogs and really SWIM!  Who has more fun at the beach than these dogs!?

Icy is a total people lover, she loves every person (as well as every dog) she meets!  She insists on greeting all the humans at the dog park, pet friendly beach, and pretty much everywhere else.  You may think that's great, but actually it is sometimes an issue.  Other dogs are often possessive of their humans.  Icy has been "corrected" by dogs several times  "Hey, Husky Girl, get your big snout away from my hu-mom!!"  I always have to keep an eye out for her being too friendly with the other pet parents.  Their fur kids don't always appreciate it!

It was an awesome day at the dog beach, we are so glad it's beach weather again!

100 Places to See With Your Dog - A Dog Friendly Brewery in Northport, NY

There's a really FUN trend that's starting up around the country, the Dog Friendly Brewery!  I was so thrilled when I discovered SAND CITY dog friendly brewery in the town of Northport, in Long Island, New York.  It's the town right next door to where we live in Huntington, Long Island!

Even though I don't drink beer myself, of course I had to check this place out!  My husband is a bit of a beer connoisseur, at least that's what he tells me.  We decided to go last Sunday afternoon, taking Icy along with us.  Northport is a lovely, quaint town.  While many of Long Island's towns have become highly commercial and lost their old fashioned charm, Northport is one of the few towns left on Long Island that has maintained it's quaintness.  That's the thing I love most about Northport.  That, and the fact that it sits right on the water, overlooking the Long Island Sound.

If the town's charm and beautiful water view don't win you over, the fact that they have a dog friendly brewery certainly will!  The SAND CITY BREWERY is a very unique place.  It's one of only two dog friendly breweries on Long Island, that I could find anyway.  Since they don't serve food, dogs are allowed INSIDE the brewery.  If they served any food, NY state law would prohibit dogs (other than service dogs) to enter the establishment.  It's standing room only, there are no chairs in the place.  They don't serve any food or soda, and they don't serve any alcohol other than beer.  This is truly a place for beer lovers!  (Oh, and Dog Lovers too!)

SAND CITY BREWERY is located at 60 Main Street but it's actually down a long alleyway, so you've got to look for it or you might miss it!  We thought it was pretty cool heading down an alley to get to the place.  If you or your pooch need some fresh air, they have an outdoor deck with benches along the fence you can sit on.  This time of year, there's a Christmas tree out on the deck too.

There were a couple of other dogs there as well.  Icy greeted them and they were all on good behavior, enjoying the attention they got from the humans.

Icy doesn't understand why this "dog" won't talk to her!  Hey, buddy!  Why won't you talk to me - what's the matter, cat got your tongue??

Although there are no chairs or stools to sit in, it's a fun place.  John and his friends tell me their beer is great too!

There are lots of great little shops and places to eat in Northport, Long Island.

Icy and I took a stroll down main street, window shopping and going inside some of the shops to say hello.  We walked in the park next to the water and took a stroll down the pier to take in the sight and smells of the water.  It was such a wonderful afternoon, we can't wait to go back!

Ahhhh, smell that beautiful salty air!!

I Love A Dog Parade!

In the small town of Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island we took Icy to the annual doggie parade.  I love pet festivals, pet parades, and in fact pet events of all kinds, but especially dog events!

Icy waits for the Dog Halloween Costume Parade to begin

The Halloween Dog Costume Parade was such a fun event!  I was surprised that they actually closed Main Street to allow pooches and their humans to parade down the street.  It's always so much fun to see pets in costumes.  Here are some highlights from the parade.

Everyone gathered on a corner, near the Long Island Sound inlet.  Icy was ready & waiting to parade!

Wearing her Headless Horseman costume, Icy patiently waiting for her chance to strut her stuff!

Finally the parade began and the crowd of dogs & their humans started strutting their stuff down Main Street.

So many cute dogs, it was total CUTENESS OVERLOAD!!

Proud owners showed off their adorable dogs of all shapes & sizes.

Not sure what this costume was but it's so cute!  Transformers maybe?

Aww, how pretty does this girl look in PINK!?

Icy ran into a fellow Husky and doggie day camp playmate, Ghost.  I swear he's the mellowest Husky I've ever known!  I'm so jealous.

Hey look!  It's Petey from the Little Rascals, LOL!  This Pittie was such a sweatheart!
