I finally got one! A 4Knines DOG CAR SEAT COVER!  It's been a couple of years now and this car seat cover for dogs has made our lives so much easier, and cleaner.  Pet friendly travel with dogs is always on our radar, so between muddy paws, debris sticking to their fur, and sand from the beach, the back seat of our SUV takes quite a beating! 🐕The 4Knines car back seat cover fits my SUV like a glove!  I can tell it's really comfy too, because the dogs settled into it immediately as soon as they jumped onto the car cover for the first time.  The material is durable but it has comfortable cushioned quilting.

🐕I got the back seat cover that accommodates split rear seats.  I love that I can pull down the back seats or the rear car seat console just by unzipping the car seat cover in between the back seats!  That helps us so much.  With my ratty blanket seat cover, we always had to remove the blanket in order to pull down the rear seats. Now we just unzip and pull down the rear seat or console.  We're always hauling stuff in our SUV's cargo.  We usually need to put one or both rear seats down to accommodate large items, so this is a huge convenience.  We can still access seat belts through the seat cover too.

4Knines car seat covers are versatile, easy to clean, and fit like a glove!

🐕 4Knines car seat covers are super easy to clean.  Even if water or dog food spill on the cover, it's fast easy cleanup.  And the seat cover is machine washable!

I used to use an old blanket draped over the back seat, but it never stayed in place and it was constantly filthy.  Vacuuming up pet hair that stuck to the blanket was such a pain.  The blanket invariably got sucked into the vacuum, especially the fringed edges - so frustrating!  When the 4Knines seat cover gets dirty we can easily wipe or vacuum up the mess, hose it down, or throw it in the washing machine.

DOGS TRAVEL SAFE IN THE CAR WITH A DOG SAFETY HARNESS

We travel with our dogs in the car a LOT.  Whether it's short rides to dog friendly parks and beaches or a cross country road trip with the dogs, traveling safely with our dogs in the car is a priority.  That's why I use a Dog Car Safety Harness that attaches to my car's seatbelt to keep my dogs secure in the car.

I didn't always use a travel safety harness for my dogs, but I do now!

Although my personal preference is a car safety harness for dogs, there are other ways to keep dogs safe in the car.  Some of my friends like to use a crate in the car for their dogs. Others like to use a pet carrier for dogs while riding in the car.  Whichever pet safety product you choose to use in the car, it will probably work very well as long as it keeps the dog secured.

Some things dog owners should never do when riding in a vehicle with dogs:

🐶 Dogs should never ride in the front seat.  

If there's an accident, a dog or cat can be thrown through the windshield on impact. 

Dogs can also be injured by the impact of an inflating airbag, the one in front of them and possibly even an airbag to the side of the dog. 

It's also possible that a dog can potentially be smothered if a front seat airbag inflates, especially if the dog is small.

Needless to say, pets should never ride on the driver's lap!  That can be a big distraction to the driver, which by default creates a safety issue for the driver, their pet, and others on the road.  As I stated above, the dog can be thrown through the windshield or smothered by an inflating airbag.  I shudder to think what could happen to a dog on the driver's lap in the event of a head-on collision!

🐶 Don't let your dog hang his head out the window of a moving car

Although many dogs love it, dogs should not hang their head out the window of a moving car.   The dog's head could hit another vehicle beside them, or the side mirror of a vehicle next to them.  They could hit their head on a low hanging tree branch, a bicycle rider, or any other object close to the car. 

Dirt and debris can fly into a dog's eyes and could cause injury to the eye. 

My eyes are far too precious, not to mention pretty, to get dirt in them by hanging my head out the window!  Also, I don't want to get smacked in the head by a Mack truck.

If the car window is open enough, a dog can jump out.  If they become startled or see something irresistible on the street like a squirrel or cat, they just might jump out the window.  Dog owners who think their dog would never, ever jump out the car window should think again. Shih Tzu Happens, I always say!  Why take the chance of your dog jumping out of a moving car into traffic?!  Perish the thought!

🐶 Never put a dog in an open truck flatbed!

Please, please don't drive with your dog in an open truck bed!  I saw this a lot when we lived in Phoenix and it made me cringe.

I once saw a Siberian Husky puppy riding in an open truck bed with a little girl. The dog's leash appeared to be tied down inside the truck bed but it didn't look like the girl was secured at all.  Even if the girl was secured somehow, that is still a massive NO-NO!  It was all I could do not to scream at the driver through the window and deliver a swift lecture. 

The dangers of a dog in an open truck bed should be obvious.  Even if he's tied down, what will happen to the dog in the event of an accident?!  What if the dog tried to jump out of the truck?  He could very well be pulled under the tires or be dragged along by his leash and strangled.

Dogs should ride safely in the back seat or the rear of the vehicle, and they should be secured either by a dog safety harness, a dog crate, or a pet carrier, with the carrier being secured to the seatbelt and the crate being secured in the rear of the car.

🚗 How does a dog Car Safety Harness work?

A dog travel harness is easy to use.  It goes on the dog just like any other harness but it has an additional loop you can put a seat belt strap through and buckle it to the car's seat belt.

This short video (2 mins) demonstrates how to use a dog car seat belt harness to keep dogs safe in the car. I'm using a dog travel safety harness from Four Paws, which I got on Chewy.com but there are many others out there.  A car safety belt harness for dogs usually works with any car seat belt system.  Attaching a dog safety harness to a seat belt in the car is similar to securing a child safety seat to the car's seat belt.

If you get out of your car unexpectedly, an unsecured dog may panic and jump out!

If you are involved in a car accident, even a minor one, your dog can panic and try to get out of the car when a door is opened.   I'm not about scare tactics, but I think it's important to know the risks of not securing your pet in the car. 

I'll end this post with two disturbing stories.   Not long ago I read about a woman driving with her German Shepherd when they had a minor accident with another car.  When she got out of the car to exchange insurance information with the other driver she didn't close her door fast enough.  Her dog, who was in the back seat, panicked and jumped out of the car into traffic.  He was struck by another car and killed.  The tragic loss of her beautiful dog could have been prevented if the dog was secured in the back seat.

I remember this 2003 story all too well.  A family was traveling on vacation with their beloved Pit Bull mix dog, Patton.  Due to poor communication and a case of mistaken identity, the family was pulled over by police and forced out of the car.  Their sweet, friendly dog wasn't secured in the car and jumped out.  One of the Officers felt "threatened" because of the dog's assumed Pit Bull breed.  He shot and killed their beloved dog.  This story haunts me so much. Every time I think about this family's tragic loss, it makes me sick to my stomach.  Would a nervous police officer feel threatened by Icy, my Siberian Husky?  Perhaps.

All these potential dangers have made me a convert.  I no longer put my dogs in the car without securing them in the back seat.  A few extra minutes is well worth it, their lives are far too precious to take chances with their safety.

As most of my readers know, we travel a lot with our dogs, Icy and Phoebe.  When planning vacations I always search for pet friendly destinations.  If we can't bring the dogs I pretty much don't want to go there!  As far as I'm concerned, Pets Are Family and you don't leave family behind when you're going on a fabulous vacation!  Well, OK sometimes you need to leave family behind when you take a holiday, but most of the time I want my fur kids with me if I'm traveling to a great vacation spot.

A few days after being notified that we won the contest, this box full of wonderful dog goodies from Chewy,com arrived on our front porch.

When we travel with our dogs it's almost always by car.  Phoebe is a small dog and can fly in the airplane cabin with me.  But Icy is a Siberian Husky, way too big to fly in the cabin of an airplane, and I won't put my pets in airplane cargo.  

When we moved to Phoenix years ago, we thought it best to find a home and settle in before bringing our cat Maggie over.  That meant I had to fly my cat by herself in airplane cargo.  I hired a company to do all the necessary work needed for a pet to fly in cargo but I can't tell you how worried and stressed I was!  Flying with your pet in the airplane cabin is a bit of a process, but  I didn't realize how complicated it would be to fly pets in cargo.  Never again, so now we load up the car and road trip with the dogs!

All these wonderful pet travel products will be so helpful on our road trips with the dogs!

I love to travel, and we are big travelers with our dogs. We've had lots of fun adventures from East coast to West coast.  Today I'm sharing some of my favorite pet travel photos with Icy and Phoebe.

Great Places To Go With Your Dog: Waterville Valley, New Hampshire

Years ago we discovered beautiful Waterville Valley Resort in New Hampshire.  It's a resort area with a small town square, condos and other lodgings.  It's geared toward outdoor activities such as skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and other fun activities.  There's an indoor ice skating rink as well.  We had been there a few times many years ago when we didn't have a dog.  We always knew it was family friendly but until recently we didn't know it was also dog friendly.

The absolute BEST part of taking our dogs with us to Waterville Valley is the dog friendly trail that runs along the back side of the resort.  It's actually a cross country ski trail, but dogs and foot traffic are allowed on this particular trail.  We took the dogs hiking each day.  It's a nice long trail, we had so much fun and it was just beautiful!

We bought this adorable little sled for the trip and Icy had fun pulling Phoebe on it.  However, Phoebe didn't want to stay put in the sled, she kept jumping out!  It was a riot.

As we meandered along the trail, we took in all the crisp mountain air and the gorgeous scenery.  This lovely stream runs all along the length of the trail.  The soothing sounds of the stream and the birds chirping happily were so relaxing.  We desperately needed to relax and unplug from all the craziness of daily life, and this was the ideal place to do that!

I wish I could lead into telling you we found a great dog friendly hotel to stay in, but that's not the case.  There are very few pet friendly lodgings in Waterville Valley.  Much of the lodgings are privately owned condominiums that don't welcome pets.  The few we did find were all booked up, you need to book those well in advance.  We found a dog friendly place to stay but it was pretty awful.  The place itself was older but it's a nice rustic lodge.  It definitely could use some updating but with a rustic feel it worked.  What didn't work at all was the dog friendly room!  When you travel with dogs you don't expect the Ritz for sure, but it should at least not be horrible!

The lobby area was one of the nicest parts of our hotel.  The giant scarf around the moose's neck was adorable!

I won't say the name of the hotel, I would never recommend it for travel with dogs or other pets, and I'm not one to badmouth products or places on my blog.  Suffice to say that the dog friendly room was super outdated, and by outdated I mean downright dingy!  Next time we travel to Waterville Valley with our dogs I'll look for a much better dog friendly place to stay.  Either that or I'll just leave the dogs home.  The only good thing about our room was the view of the stream from our window.

I was amazed at how much Phoebe loved being in Waterville Valley!  She normally Hates the cold and doesn't even want to go out in the yard to potty.  But something happened to transform my fluffy delicate dog into a snow dog!  She was racing along the trail each day, and even during nighttime potty breaks she was happy to be walking around the village.  Who was this dog?!?  I guess there's a bit of magic in those mountains.

John and I had some fun of our own too, we both had a chance to ski!  You may be wondering how we swung that with two dogs.  I like to downhill ski and John is a cross country skier, so we ski separately anyway.  I got to go skiing while he watched the dogs.  When it was his turn to ski I stayed with the dogs.  The cross country trails are right at the resort and the downhill trails are a quick shuttle ride up the road so it worked out great!  

We each had some fun bonding time alone with the dogs out on the trail and we both got a chance to ski.  The skiing was terrific, and being mid week the slopes & trails were practically empty, I felt like I had the whole mountain to myself!

Despite the crummy accommodations, it was an awesome trip!  I would definitely recommend a trip to Waterville Valley Resort, just be cautious about where you stay if you brings your dog or cat along.  Happy Trails!

DOG SAFETY AT THE BEACH

On a warm and sunny Summer day, what's more fun than a day at the beach with your dog? 



A beautiful day at the Montauk Lighthouse beach, but Watch Out! there could be dangerous breakers ahead!

Dogs love to frolic along the seashore with their faithful humans at their side.  Along with all the exciting stuff to discover along the shore are dangers to watch out for so keep dog safety at the beach in mind.

Winter Safety Tip For Pets

If you live in a warm climate, you may think you don't need to be concerned about Winter Safety for your dog or cat.  Not true, especially if you travel to colder climes with your pet!  Ever head up to the mountains for the weekend?

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  Can you believe we've said goodbye to 2015 already?  It feels like I had barely said hello to 2015, but here I am ushering in 2016!  This eventful year has really flown by.

As I reflect on the past year and scroll through the blog posts I published in 2015, I feel a sense of accomplishment.  Most of my posts were joyful to write.  Some were more difficult, I felt like I was taking a risk by baring my soul, exercising my "digital bravery".   As I close out for the year, I'd like to share a few of my posts that are my personal favorites from 2015, in case you missed them during the course of the year.  I hope you enjoy them!

> As many of you know, my Siberian Husky Icy and I are a Therapy Dog team.  One of my favorite Therapy Dog activities is the children's reading program where Kids reading to Therapy Dogs helps improve reading skills.  It's such a fun program, I love to see the children's faces light up when they see the dogs at the library.  It's so rewarding to see their reading skills improve week after week!  Although it was brief, this was one of my favorite posts to write this year.

> We love to travel with our dogs, Icy and Phoebe!  One of our favorite places to visit with the dogs is Sedona, the stunning Red Rock region in Northern Arizona in 100 Places to See With Your Dog; Sedona in the Fall.  I really enjoy sharing the great dog friendly places we've found with other pet parents.  You can read about other places we've traveled with our dogs by clicking on the Pet Travel tab from the Home page. 

> Fostering Saves Lives.  It's that simple.  I love to foster shelter dogs in my home, it's a lot of fun for me and my dogs to have a new little visitor come and stay with us for a few weeks.  Even if you can't foster a dog for weeks you can be a Day Foster, fostering dogs for just one day.  It may not sound like much, but this post talks about how even one day away from the shelter can have significant positive impacts for a shelter dog!  This is an easy way to make a real difference for a shelter dog, it's something I'm very passionate about.

> This next post is one of those posts where I had to exercise some of that "digital bravery" I mentioned.  The world of animal welfare is an ugly truth, it's not always cut and dry and it's rarely as simple as people think.  I didn't know how people would react to the directness of my post or the analogy I used when discussing what I believe to be the only way to truly solve the problem of pet homelessness.

> One of the highlights of the year was attending BlogPaws2015 in Nashville in May.  This post contains highlights from that fabulous conference!  I'm so glad I went, it was the best experience and definitely the pet lovers event of the year!

DOG FRIENDLY GETAWAY IN MONTAUK, NEW YORK

Long Island, New York is well known for it's beautiful beaches and great schools.  One thing it isn't known for is being very dog friendly.  That doesn't mean there aren't some great places around Long Island you can enjoy with your dog.  But there's a great Dog Friendly getaway in Montauk New York, at the Eastern end of Long Island.  It's one of the few places on Long Island where you'll find some beautiful, fun spots to hang out in with your dog.

TIPS FOR AIR TRAVEL WITH PETS

If you plan to travel with your dog or cat and you're traveling by airplane, a lot of consideration and careful planning is needed. I'd like to talk specifically about those pet travel requirements that are particularly troublesome and can potentially ruin your trip. Follow these tips for air travel with pets to ensure a stress free flight with your dog, cat or other pet! ** Information in this post is updated as of December, 2024.

TIPS FOR AIR TRAVEL WITH DOGS AND OTHER PETS

There are two ways to travel with your pet by air; either bring your pet on board with you or check them as cargo, where they fly in the belly of the plane.  

Each airline has it's own set of rules for pets and if you don't familiarize yourself with the rules of your chosen airline it can be disastrous. (Note: this post applies to companion pets, not certified service animals)

100 Places To See With Your Dog: Flagstaff, Arizona

Last Thursday the weather in Phoenix was expected to hit 100 degrees.  It's way too early for 100 degrees, so last minute we decided to load the dogs into the car and head North to Flagstaff for beautiful mountains and much cooler weather!  Although it's only 3 hours away, it's nearly 30 degrees cooler in Flagstaff than in Phoenix!  Temps in Phoenix can easily reach 110 degrees in Summer, so it's no surprise that Phoenicians flock to Flagstaff in Summer!

Icy was in heaven with the cool weather in Flagstaff.  Here she is posing amongst the beautiful Aspen trees.  Aspen trees look a lot like White Birch trees.

Flagstaff is largely known for being a fun college town, but high elevation and levels of precipitation provide lots of natural beauty and cooler outdoor activities as well.  You can be skiing in Flagstaff in the morning, and sipping a latte at an outdoor cafe in 70 degree Phoenix weather in the afternoon!  It's the coolest thing!

Your Dog Can Be Your Best Travel Buddy

I know many of you are dreaming of a fabulous warm weather vacation.  As you dream and plan for your next vacation, will you be taking your dog along with you?  I hope so because your dog can be a great travel companion! SPIRITED COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG, A PERFECTLY SPOOKY HALLOWEEN

Legends of witch trials and ghostly hauntings abound in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia!  At the center of Colonial Williamsburg is The Revolutionary City, a historic and educational re-creation of life in Colonial Williamsburg during the American Revolution, which lasted from 1775 - 1783.  Colonial Williamsburg definitely ranks as one of our favorite dog friendly travel destinations.

The city looks and feels very authentic.  American “Colonists” not only dress in period costume but wander the town in character, re-enacting scenes from life during the era and engaging tourists in 1700’s conversation!  One such gentlemen approached us, eyeing our Siberian Husky, Icy, curiously “That’s a fine looking animal you have there, sir!” and proceeded to make us an offer to purchase her for 100 quid!  We had some really fun banter with him, explaining that our precious FurKid was NOT for sale at any price!   

Spending Halloween or Christmas in Colonial Williamsburg is certainly fun and educational, but some of it’s history can be downright scary!

American "Colonists" discuss & debate the issues of the day

One of our favorite activities was a guided candlelight Tavern Ghost Walk.  A small group of us met late in the evening in front of one of the historic taverns to begin the tour.  Our guide fascinated us with bizarre ghost stories, where people have sworn they’ve seen and heard ghosts that still haunt the old buildings.  It turns out the historic Revolutionary City, with many of it’s original buildings still in tact, has quite a haunted past!

Oh, Daddy, I told you not to practice witchcraft here!  The Colonists do NOT like that!

As we walked thru the Revolutionary City by candlelight, listening to our guide recount stories of the ghosts that supposedly still haunt the taverns and historic buildings, our dog Icy started to become antsy.  This was very out of character for her, but we chalked it up to being in a strange place, walking around in the darkness of night.  

As our tour wound down people left the group, slowly making their way back to their hotels.  After a few minutes we realized there were hardly any people left on the cobblestone streets of the Revolutionary City.  It was eerily quiet and dark.  Icy was becoming more and more agitated. 

Suddenly, Icy started barking wildly for no apparent reason, lunging at one of the deserted historic taverns!  It was so eerie, it made us a little jumpy ourselves.  We quickened our steps and hightailed it back to our hotel! Our dog friendly hotel was on premises inside the revolutionary city, so thankfully we didn't have far to go. 

When we made it back to our hotel room we breathed a sigh of relief – Whew!  That was weird.  It took a few minutes for Icy to calm down, but she soon settled down on her blanket and fell fast asleep.

What made Icy act so weird??  Was it just the cold night air and the unfamiliar darkened streets?  Or had she sensed something else, perhaps something from the spirit world that only she could sense?  Hmmm…. I guess we’ll never know for sure!

Not only is Colonial Williamsburg a great pet friendly vacation spot, it's also a wonderful travel destination for kids. It's fun and interesting for the whole family and the kids will learn what life was like during the American Revolution.  I especially like Colonial Williamsburg as both a Halloween vacation spot and a Christmas vacation destination for the whole family. Including the dog!
