However, in the rush to be prepared for the humans, sometimes Winter safety tips for dogs isn't top of mind for pet parents.

WINTER SAFETY TIPS FOR DOGS

I created this Infographic with 5 essential Winter Safety Tips for Dogs to remind folks that just because our dogs have fur, it doesn't mean they are impervious to freezing temperatures. There are some serious safety risks to be aware of when your dog spends time outside in the bitter cold!

Many of our dogs love playing, walking, or hiking in the snow. Sometimes we can't even get them to come back inside! But we know better than they do, so it's important to be mindful of how long we let them stay out in the cold and watch for signs of hypothermia in dogs such as:

🐾 Excessive panting or drooling

🐾 Pale gums

🐾 Rapid heart rate

🐾 Vomiting or diarrhea

🐾 Any kind of unsteadiness or disorientation

🐾 And of course seizures or collapse, which requires immediate Veterinary attention!

I hope you found these 5 Winter Safety Tips for Dogs helpful. Leave us a comment and share your thoughts, we always love hearing from you!

NEW YEAR's DOG HEALTH RESET!

Start the new year by performing a quick at-home Dog Health Checklist. Here's a brief DOG HEALTH CHECK you can do at home in just a few minutes.

✅ Look at your dog's teeth & gums, checking for redness and tartar. Gums should be pink, not gray or very red. Teeth shouldn't have significant tartar buildup.

✅ Check paw pads for cracks, dryness, or overgrown nails.

✅ Run your hands over your dog's body to feel for new lumps or weight changes.

✅ Inspect your dog's ears inside for signs of infection or irritation. A foul odor from your dog's ear, bleeding, discharge, swelling or redness or scabbing can be symptoms of ear infection in dogs. Excessive scratching or pawing at their ear can also be a symptom of ear problems in dogs.

✅ Check your dog's ID tags. Make sure they're still securely attached to your dog's collar, and that the information on the tags is still current and legible.

✅ Check your dog's microchip information to make sure it's still current. Update your contact information if needed.

You don't need to wait for your dog's annual Veterinarian visit, do this 5 to 10 minute dog health check today to feel empowered about your dog's health!

Contact your Veterinarian right away if you discover any changes in your dog's body, or if you see anything that concerns you. Small changes or abnormalities that are noticed early can make a big difference in your dog's health!

NOTE: This brief health check is not a substitute for regular wellness visits to the Veterinarian. It's a way to you to stay mindful of your dog's health, and to look for any changes or abnormalities in your dog that may be a concern.

PET PRODUCTS FOR DOG OWNERS

Pet Health is always top of mind for dog owners, especially new dog parents. Books that can help them better understand any abnormalities or symptoms they may observe in their pup can ease their mind and educate them about dog health.  Symptoms to Watch for in your Dog, by Jana Rade, is an award winning guide to help dog parents better understand what their dog is telling them about their health, and how to best advocate for them.

Learn how to see and think about changes in your dog's appearance, habits, and behavior. Some signs that might not trigger your concern can be important indicators that your dog needs to see a veterinarian right away.

For pet parents who love to travel, and want to bring their new dog along for the fun, Tiffany Smith from Pennies, Places and Paws offers a Pup Memories Passport Book. It's a small passport-sized booklet where you can record memories of your travel adventures with your pet. It is not a legal travel document of any kind, it's a booklet for you to record the travel memories you create with your pet. You can also attach photos from your trips and post them in the booklet.

This is a fun, unique gift for the travelling pet parent! They can create travel memories with their new pup right from the start!

I hope you liked these ideas for puppy and dog gifts for a special person who's gotten a new puppy or dog - or something for yourself as a dog mom!

If you don't think any of these items are quite right for that special pup or dog parent, a pet supplies gift card to Chewy.com or Amazon, a gift certificate for a local dog training facility, or a gift card for their local veterinarian for vaccinations and other vet bills would be appreciated.

Whatever you decide to give, I'm sure the new pup and their humans will appreciate your thoughtfulness!
