THE SCENTING POWER OF A DOG's NOSE THAT MAY SURPRISE YOU

Most people know dogs help with search and rescue. But did you know a dog could help find a hidden USB drive, locate wildlife, find cash, or help track down wildlife poachers? A dog's sense of smell is 10,000 to 100,000 times more sensitive than a humans! Dogs can detect more smells than we know. So let's get into the types of scenting power of a dog's nose that may surprise you.

Even modern technology can’t match the scenting power of a dog’s nose. From saving lives in disasters to finding things we can't see, hear, or smell, scent dogs guide us every day, using their incredible scent ability. We humans have come to rely on dogs scenting ability in so may ways, some you may never have even heard of.

THE SCENTING POWER OF DOGS

In this post, we're going beyond the most well known dog search-and-rescue ability to the surprising, less familiar ways dogs use their sense of smell to help humans. Some of these just might blow your mind a little!

AVALANCHE RESCUE DOGS

Since the 2026 Winter Olympics have ended not long ago, I thought I'd start with this one. Avalanche Dogs are specially trained dogs that find people who have been buried in the snow.

If a human is buried in snow during an avalanche they must be rescued within minutes or they will likely die. They can suffocate, die from head trauma, or extreme compression from snow on the body can kill them. They must be rescued immediately. Time is of the essence!

Avalanche rescue dogs ride in helicopters, on snow mobiles, and I even saw a video of a ski patrol team member with her rescue dog riding on her shoulders as they skied together patrolling the mountain!

Avalanche rescue dogs are a lot like police dogs, in that they are paired with one handler. The two become a team who work together doing this highly specialized rescue work.

Avalanche dogs are often Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds. But they can be many types of breeds who can handle the cold and rough mountain terrain.

I read about at least one rescued dog who became an Avalanche Rescue Dog! I love when rescued dogs are given new life as a working dog, helping humans. Those stories are always so beautiful, don't you think!

These hard working dogs are used by ski patrol and mountain rescue teams worldwide. You can read more about Avalanche Rescue Dogs here.

ELECTRONICS DETECTION DOGS

One of the things I find really interesting is that dogs can be trained to sniff out hidden electronic devices like:

🐾 Cell phones
🐾 Laptops
🐾 USB drives and micro SD cards
🐾 Hard drives
🐾 Recording devices

You may be wondering why dogs would be needed to sniff out these devices? Specially trained dogs use this type of scenting ability in prisons, for border control, fraud cases, in schools, homicide cases, and in child exploitation and trafficking investigations. The dogs are primarily trained to sniff out a chemical called triphenylphosphine oxide, a chemical coating that's typically used in electronic devices to prevent overheating.

These expertly trained dogs can often use their powerful noses to find devices that manual searches done by law enforcement couldn't find.

WILDLIFE FECES (SCAT) DETECTION

These conservation canines are used to monitor endangered species gathering dietary information, reproductive data, and health and genetic data on these populations.

They can help locate information on invasive animal, insect, and plant species. Here in Florida, monitoring and addressing invasive animal species is a big deal. We always hear about it on the news.

Species of reptiles such as Burmese python snakes, Green iguanas and many others cause concern for Florida. Such invasive species negatively impact Florida's ecosystem including the Everglades, native animal populations, and some can even damage residential structures!

You can learn more about conservation canines on the Working Dogs For Conservation web site.

POACHING AND WILDLIFE TRAFFICKING DETECTION

These highly trained dogs can track poachers, locate animal trapping snares. They can also scent for ivory, rhino horn, certain animal skins, and other animal substances poachers trade illegally.

This really gets me. It is so heart-wrenching when I hear about the devastation that heartless poachers cause. They kill beautiful wild animals to harvest their tusks, horns, and skins, often desecrating animal populations and leaving orphaned animal babies to languish and die.

It makes me so angry when hunters and poachers use "conservation" as an excuse for their greedy or blood-thirsty activities. That is absurd! If Conservation of a particular animal population is needed, than it would be properly researched, thoughtfully planned out on an appropriate scale, and above all it would be done humanely! These heartless people are simply lying to themselves and everyone else to justify their in humane activities. It's sickening.

These amazing dogs operate in national parks or other protected areas, at airports, shipping ports, and other transportation areas. The dogs can also sniff out the illegal weapons or ammunition used for this vile activity. These dogs are true heroes in my book!

CURRENCY DETECTION DOGS

Dogs can even be trained to find large amounts of hidden cash! Law enforcement uses these dogs to locate hidden or stolen money usually tied to criminal activity. The dogs are trained to smell the specific ink used in printing money.

The dogs search for the scent of the ink in luggage, vehicles, buildings, and even on people! A Dog's nose is so sensitive, they can even locate the faintest scents.

I watch that show To Catch A Smuggler on TV and I'm always amazed at what border agents and scent dogs find on people - the stuff they try to smuggle into the country is unbelievable! The show highlights not only US airports and border checkpoints, but major airports around the world that are frequently used for smuggling contraband.

Most of us have always known how amazing dogs noses are. I hope you enjoyed reading about some of the lesser known scenting powers of dogs noses. Dogs do so much to help us humans. Leave us a comment and let me know if any of these dog scenting abilities surprised you!
