WHY DENTAL HEALTH IS IMPORTANT FOR DOGS #PetDentalHealthMonthWithOratene

February is Pet Dental Health Month!

Lack of dental health in dogs and cats can lead to dental disease, which can cause more serious health issues. Toxins from periodontal disease get absorbed into the pet's blood stream which can cause infection in the body. This can potentially damage kidney, lever, heart, and brain tissue.

It's estimated that over 80% of dogs will show signs of periodontal disease by age three! I think we can safely say that paying attention to a dog's teeth should be part of our overall dog health care routine.

The large majority of dog owners don't brush their dog's teeth at all. That doesn't surprise me, in fact I'm one of those dog parents who don't brush their dog's teeth. Oh, it's not for lack of effort, believe me I've tried many times! But honestly it was always a struggle, especially with my Siberian Husky, Icy. She hated it! My efforts at trying to develop a habit of brushing their teeth every day was an Epic Fail.  But you know what? It's OK, because I found a great line of brushless pet dental health products. That's right, I said BRUSHLESS!

Providing dental care for my dogs is easy with the Oratene line of Brushless Pet Oral Care products, by Zymox. With Oratene, my dogs really can have healthy gums, clean teeth, and fresh breath, without brushing! Oratene products are free of antibiotics and other harsh ingredients. These are the best products for dog dental health I've found, and I've tried several brands.

Here's how Oratene works to promote Dog Dental Health

The Oratene product line features Enzymatic Brushless Oral Care for pets. That means it uses the power of enzymes to help keep your dog or cats' teeth clean, breath fresh, and gums healthy. These Veterinarian approved products make dog dental care so easy, I have pretty much ditched the dog toothbrush for good!

How Pet's Dental Health Effects Overall Health

February is Pet Dental Health Month, but we should be conscious of our dog's oral health all year long.  Poor dental health in pets can lead to more serious health issues.  Whiter teeth and the absence of bad breath in my dog are great, but good oral health for dogs goes deeper than that.

If a dog has poor oral health it can lead to dental disease, especially periodontal disease which can lead to more serious health problems.  Toxins from periodontal disease get absorbed into the dog's blood stream and can cause infections in the body.  This can potentially damage kidney, heart, and brain tissue.

Good Pet Oral Health isn't just about fresh breath and whiter teeth, it's an important part of your dog's overall health!

Many kinds of bacteria can grow in your pet's mouth.  The mouth is moist and dark, a perfect place for bacteria to flourish.  Bacteria such as plaque hardens and becomes tartar, which can throw off the balance of normal, healthy microbial flora in your dog's mouth.  This can ultimately lead to dental disease.

When we adopted Phoebe at age 5 her teeth were already in poor shape.

Pets taking medications are especially prone to dental health issues. Some medications can cause a condition known as "Dry Mouth".  Although pets may still have saliva and drool, the quality of the saliva is poor.  Pets with chronic Dry Mouth can develop severe halitosis (very bad breath), and tooth decay.

PET DENTAL DISEASE CAN LEAD TO SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEMS

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) as well as  PetMD, nearly 80% of dogs over the age of 3 have dental disease.  It's the most common health problem effecting dogs.

Pet Dental disease includes:

🐶 Periodontal Disease; one of the most common diseases in dogs, it causes damage to the gum, bone, and tissue around the teeth.

🙀 Gingivitis; an inflammation and infection of the gums.

🐶 Tooth root abscesses

🙀 Broken or lost teeth

When I adopted Phoebe she was about 5 years old.  From the start her teeth weren't good.  I was nervous about getting her a dental cleaning because in order for pets to have a Veterinary dental cleaning they need to be put under anesthesia. That scared me and I didn't want to take the chance.

I tried to brush her teeth but it didn't work well, she hated it.  I was really happy when I found Oratene water additive, which helps prevent plaque and remove biofilm.  I hoped the water additive, along with dental chews would help me avoid a dental cleaning for her altogether, but it was too late, her teeth were too far gone.  Although it helped both my dogs bad breath a lot, the damage to Phoebe's teeth could not be undone.

Phoebe's beautiful pearly whites after her cleaning at the Vet.

At 8 years old one of Phoebe's teeth fell out for no apparent reason.  After that I bit the bullet and took her to the Vet for a dental cleaning.  I'm so glad I did because she ended up needing to have 6 teeth pulled!

I felt so bad that she had to go through the stress of a Veterinary dental cleaning, anesthesia, and having to stay at the Vet all day and into the evening.  I vowed to make her first Veterinary dental cleaning her last by using Oratene's Brushless Oral Care Toothpaste Gel and water additive!

MY PET DENTAL HEALTH ARSENAL

After her dental cleaning, I made a more serious effort to use both the Oratene Brushless Toothpaste Gel and Water Additive daily.

Phoebe never accepted me brushing her teeth, she just hated it too much.  Rather than continuing to struggle getting her to accept a toothbrush or finger brush, I tried Oratene's Brushless Toothpaste Gel.  Yes, that's right, I said Brushless toothpaste!  You just apply the gel to your dog's gums once or twice a day. The pet's saliva works to get the toothpaste to all parts of the mouth without brushing.  No more struggling with an uncomfortable brush in Phoebe's mouth.

The toothpaste gel and water additive are safe for use on both dogs and cats.  That's such a convenience, you don't have to keep two sets of pet dental care products for your dog and cat, they can share!

***** IMPORTANT! Never use human toothpaste on your pet, it contains ingredients, such as fluoride, that are toxic to pets *****

Fortunately, Phoebe didn't have much of an issue with me sticking my finger in her mouth, it was the brushing she hated.  I took the time needed to have her get used to me applying the gel to her gums.  It was a much easier process than I feared!  I make sure to give her a small treat afterwards so she knows that the toothpaste gel leads to a TREAT! I think she almost looks forward to it!

I'll continue using Oratene's Brushless Toothpaste Gel along with the Oratene Water Additive, and hopefully Phoebe won't have to get another dental cleaning for the rest of her senior years.

Dogs Poor Dental Health Leads To Health Problems #OrateneOralCare Giveaway

February is NATIONAL PET DENTAL HEALTH MONTH!

Dog dental health isn't just about clean teeth or the unpleasant smell that goes along with bad breath.  Pet oral health is an important part of your dog's overall health, so you don't want to overlook it!  Your pet's mouth is an ideal place for all kinds of bacteria to grow, including plaque which hardens and becomes tartar.  This can throw off the balance of normal, healthy microbial flora and lead to serious oral health problems.

PET DENTAL DISEASE CAN LEAD TO SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEMS

According to PetMD, one of the largest online resources for pet health information, 78% of dogs over the age of 3 have some form of dental disease.  It's the most common health problem effecting dogs.  Pet Dental disease can consist of:

* An accumulation of Plaque on the surface of the teeth, which then hardens and becomes Tartar

* Gum inflammation and infection, called Gingivitis
* Tooth root abscesses
* Broken or lost teeth
* Periodontal Disease, one of the most common conditions in dogs and cats, causes damage to the gum, bone, and tissue around the teeth.  Toxins from periodontal disease are absorbed into the dog's blood stream and can cause infections.  This can lead to more serious health problems, potentially damaging kidney, heart, and brain tissue.

Oratene's line of Brushless Pet Oral Health Products  make it easy to kill harmful bacteria and germs, and remove plaque biofilm in your dog's mouth.  Their products break down plaque and biofilm, and specifically target the harmful odor causing bacteria and microorganisms in the mouth. It freshens your dog's breath while maintaining a healthy oral ecology.

Oratene products are especially beneficial for senior pets, pets with special health conditions like Diabetes, and pets who are taking medications for behavior, pain, allergies, heart problems, thyroid dysfunction, or urinary incontinence.

Many pets taking medication can experience a change in the quality of saliva.  Although pets may still have saliva and drool, this condition is called "Dry Mouth".  Pets with chronic Dry Mouth develop severe halitosis (very bad breath), and accumulate plaque which can lead to tartar and tooth decay.

Oratene's line of Pet Dental Care products restores oral balance, reduces harmful bacteria & yeast, and dissolves plaque biofilm.

One of the products in their line of pet dental care products is the Oratene Water Additive.  It's a flavorless concentrate you add to your pet's water each day that provides a safe, healthy way to conveniently keep teeth clean without brushing!

Oratene Water Additive
was great news for me.  I've had a hard time trying to brush Icy and Phoebe's teeth.   I tried really hard to brush their teeth.  I read how-to articles, I watched videos, but it was such a struggle trying to brush their teeth.  It was becoming so unpleasant for them, and for me, that I just gave up.

2 PUMPS OF ORATENE WATER ADDITIVE IN 4 CUPS OF WATER - THAT'S IT!

I've been looking for an effective way to clean their teeth without stressing them out.  Although my dogs don't take medication and don't have "Dry Mouth", they are both showing signs of deteriorating dental health.  Oratene's Water Additive is perfect for us!  I've been  using it for a few weeks now and it's great.  It's so easy and convenient to use and the dog's don't even notice it's in their water.  Their breath doesn't stink so much anymore either!

If your dog is taking medication, or if you just want to improve their oral hygiene and bad breath, give Oratene Water Additive a try.

Note: According to Oratene, the Water Additive can be used with a pet water fountain however "the filter MUST be taken out or it will remove the active compounds and it will plug up the filter."

Oratene Pet Dental Care Products are available at Petco stores and other retailers, as well as from Veterinarians.
