CAN OMEGA 3 SUPPLEMENTS IMPROVE DOG HEALTH?

It pains me to say it but my dogs are getting on in years. Icy and Phoebe are 12 and 13 years old.  I can't believe they're senior pets, where did the time go?!  As they've aged, I have seen some changes in my dogs vitality and skin coat so I've been researching the benefits of supplements for pets.

There have been so many advances in pet health over the years, enabling pets to live longer healthier lives.  If you read my earlier post about Giving Pets The Gift Of Good Health, you know that pet supplements are something I've become very interested in for Icy and Phoebe.

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential for dogs. Omega 3 supplements for dogs. Pet health, Dog supplements, Dog vitamins, Dog health
Icy has always been able to hike for miles at a time!  I want  her to be able to keep doing that for years to come.

I want my dogs to be as healthy and active as possible so we can continue sharing adventures together for many years to come!  I feed them high quality dog food, give them medications to protect them from Ticks, Fleas, and Heartworm disease, and I make sure they get lots of exercise.  At this stage of their lives I feel they could benefit from additional supplements, including Omega 3 fatty acids.

DOG HEALTH BENEFITS OF OMEGA 3 SUPPLEMENTS

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential to dog health and are an important part of a dog's diet.

Dogs are physiologically unable to make their own Omega 3 fatty acids. This is why dogs have a dietary need for the Omega 3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic (EPA), alpha linoleic acid (ALA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

Omega 3 essential fatty acids can be found in high quality pet foods, but usually in small amounts.  It can be beneficial to your pet's health to add Omega 3 fatty acids to their diet.

Omega 3 fatty acids are beneficial for pets:

Poor skin condition can cause itching, irritation, and skin allergies, which could lead to bacterial infections

😺 Can improve Immune Function

🐶 Can improve Heart and Brain function

😺 Can improve Joint function

🐶 Can reduce inflammation in the body. Many common pet diseases cause inflammation. Omega 3 fatty acids can help lessen the development of inflammation in a pet's body

😺 Can improve Allergies. Omega 3 fatty acids have the ability to reduce inflammation

🐶 According to PETMD, Omega 3 fatty acids can help with kidney function, lymphoma, heart disease, cognitive function, arthritis, and other conditions

Fish oils, such as salmon and other fish oils are great sources of Omega 3's

Salveo Petcare's fish oil supplements are a great way to add Omega 3 fatty acids to your dog or cat's diet.  I recently discovered Salveo Petcare's OMEGA 3 WILD FISH OIL and WILD SALMON OIL WITH OMEGA 3.  I've started adding Salveo's fish oil supplements to Icy and Phoebe's diet.

My pittie sisters passed at 14 and 14.5 --- it is so hard to watch them age. We did start giving them fish oil when they were about 10 as recommended by my vet, not sure if it contributed to their great lifespan, but I know they walked better and their sight stayed strong right until the end!

Thanks for such an interesting read. As someone who adopts old dogs I'm always interested in finding out about beneficial supplements. Unfortunately my senior dog Red is very prone to pancreatitis so I have to be extremely careful with what she gets, and that means fish oils are off the list.

I always knew about Omega 3 supplements for humans but not for dogs! Cool! I thought there were benefits for the joints but didn't realize all the additional benefits like stopping cancer from spreading and heart disease prevention. Wow. Great post. Will share.

Recently I have been thinking about adding Omega 3 to our dogs diet, every week I do add sardines and mackerel to their food, so I hope this is helping whilst I learn more about dogs & Omega 3.

I do give a fish oil tablet to Andy each day and I have used other Omega 3's with other supplements. When I got him he had bad skin issues and now we control mostly with supplements. I had forgotten about the benefits to eye health. (YAYDog Clare)

Omega-3 absolutely are a needed addition to a dog's diet at any age. Think about it, naturally fed animals have a completely different omega-3 to omega-6 ratio in their meat than most of the commercially farmed ones. There is an interesting paper listing all lipid values as found in grass-fed versus grain-fed beef, "A review of fatty acid profiles and antioxidant content in grass-fed and grain-fed beef."

Every day ... I knew some of these benefits but not all ... like i didn't know about the slowing cancer part... :)

I give my three huskies Salmon Oil and I have definitely seen a difference in their coats! My Gracie is 10 1/2 years old and is still very healthy and active. She still loves going on hikes and does not have any issues with her joints.

I give salmon oil to my three huskies as well! I have definitely seen a difference in their coats. Gracie, my 10 year old, is still very active and loves going on hikes. She keeps up with two young ones!

I have given my last 3 dogs purified fish oil with an IFOS rating of 5. I have heard it makes puppies smarter and Gusto is certainly one smart dog...sometimes he is a smart a__ but we won't go into details on that thought.

I give the boys supplements including fish oil. It certainly helps keep their coats nice and cuts down on the shedding.

Mr. N's food comes with fish oil added to it. People always comment on how his coat is super soft.

All of the research that I've read seems to indicate that fish oil is a healthy addition to a dog's diet. I've seen a noticeable difference when I've added it to my dogs' food.

That's a nice long life for both dogs, it's heartbreaking we can't keep them longer. I'm so glad to hear that fish oil helped improve their gait and that their sight remained strong.

Yes, I would think fish oil is very beneficial for senior dogs, but you're right it's important to work with your Vet on adding any supplements to a pet's diet. Thanks Hindy!

I'm so glad you like the post, and thank you for sharing Kamira! It's amazing how many supplements and foods that are good for humans are also beneficial for pets.

That is so great for you to add fish to your dogs diet Michelle! I try to give my dogs salmon whenever I can, but it's not always easy to prepare it for them & it's expensive. Supplements are an easier way to get them some beneficial fish oils.

I'm SO happy to hear that you've been able to control your dog's skin issues with supplements, Clare! Isn't it amazing how beneficial supplements can be for dogs skin?

I'm happy to hear you confirm the need for Omega 3 in a dog's diet Jana, especially because I know you have so much Veterinary knowledge! That paper sounds really interesting, you should put that link on your blog somewhere if you haven't already. Thanks!

I didn't know about all these additional benefits either! I'm glad I've started adding Omega 3 supplements to my dogs diet.

I'm glad to hear it! Icy's coat is getting kind of dull so I'm hoping these supplements will help that and can also help maintain her joint health.

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

Icy and Phoebe are both still really active at almost 9 too, Icy thinks she's still a puppy LOL!!

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

LOL, Phoebe can be a bit of a smart alec too! This fish oil is wild caught to retain it's purity. I'm glad I found this beneficial supplement.

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

OMG, it cuts down on shedding too?! I wonder if it can help Icy minimize her Husky shedding - anything will help LOL!

That's a good benefit in a dog food, I'm glad it helps keep his coat nice & soft.

Thank you for this great post! This is a topic near and dear to my heart as I'm a senior pup and starting to show signs of arthritis. I just which they make Omega 3 supplements in soft chew treats as I don't like the pills/gel tabs. I hope both Icy and Phoebe have many more adventures to come and sure want to see them again soon.

It's so hard to accept it when our fur children begin to age. I can't believe Truffle and Brulee will be 7 this summer and now I'm finding out Truffle will need to go on a special diet because of bladder stones. Glad you found something that is working for your dogs.

Perfect timing as I have been considering adding Omega 3's to Ruby's routine. I didn't know they also helped with allergies, too. Ruby has some auto-immune issues and skin allergies so maybe adding Omega 3's will help. Thanks for a great review!

We've been using fish oil for quite a while. I think we might have started it for the joint benefits. Since both of our senior girls had arthritis, and Luke has bad knees, that's been a priority for me. Both of our girls did so well even with their arthritis that something was definitely helping!
I will continue to use it for Luke for his bad knees, and to benefit his skin and coat.

Yes, my research had turned up the same thing that fish oil, especially with it's Omega's, is really healthy for pets. I'm so glad you've seen a big difference in your dogs after adding it to their diet!

I'm so glad you like our post Spencer! I mix the gel caps with Icy and Phoebe's food and they eat it up. They seem to enjoy the taste. I've also pierced the caplets and squeezed the liquid onto their food, but sice they'll eat it right in the food I don't really have to!

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

Poor Truffle, she's had a very hard couple of weeks. It really stinks when our furbabies start to show signs of aging. I hope Truffle will do well with the new food and can keep those stones away!

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

From everything I've read and talking to my Veterinarian, I think it's a great idea to add Omega 3's. Apparently, commercial pet foods don't add much of it in foods because it is more costly than, for example, Omega 6 additives. I was surprised to hear that Omega 3 can help with so many health issues for pets!

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

Wow, I'm so happy to hear that you've seen positive results with the addition of fish oil! I've wanted to try it for awhile, so this is a great opportunity for me.

Layla has been on Omega Fish Oil for as long as I can remember, I give her liquid in her food and she loves it. Bless our seniors they need all the supplements to keep them going.

This is information I wouldn't have thought of. One of my family members has a senior dog, and I think they would benefit from this. Thanks for a great post!

I am a HUGE advocate for the power of natural supplements to keep our pets safe. We have both of our dogs on supplements now and I credit that and higher-quality pet food for the fact that they are so active. My girl is a 13-year-old GSD mix and still runs around like a little puppy. It means the world to me to watch her go!

Our dogs age just too quickly...the years seem to fly by. Like you, I cannot believe my boy Wolf, one of the "pupsters," is now 13.5! I have always believed in supplements and had my five on them since they were young. Omegas, I believe, are important to their health. Excellent post, Cathy! Pinning to share!

I am a big believer in supplements. Ours get New Zealand Green Mussel and the difference it makes is huge. This sounds a great supplement for dogs - fish oil transforms lives!

I always say 'Supplements Rock' and they give a pet's life such a big boost. Try this stuff everyone!

Truffle and Brulee will be 10 years old this summer. They are doing great. They have their wellness checkup next week, so I'm interested in talking to the vet about their care since they are now considered seniors.
