Dogs Poor Dental Health Leads To Health Problems #OrateneOralCare Giveaway

February is NATIONAL PET DENTAL HEALTH MONTH!

Dog dental health isn't just about clean teeth or the unpleasant smell that goes along with bad breath.  Pet oral health is an important part of your dog's overall health, so you don't want to overlook it!  Your pet's mouth is an ideal place for all kinds of bacteria to grow, including plaque which hardens and becomes tartar.  This can throw off the balance of normal, healthy microbial flora and lead to serious oral health problems.

PET DENTAL DISEASE CAN LEAD TO SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEMS

According to PetMD, one of the largest online resources for pet health information, 78% of dogs over the age of 3 have some form of dental disease.  It's the most common health problem effecting dogs.  Pet Dental disease can consist of:

* An accumulation of Plaque on the surface of the teeth, which then hardens and becomes Tartar

* Gum inflammation and infection, called Gingivitis
* Tooth root abscesses
* Broken or lost teeth
* Periodontal Disease, one of the most common conditions in dogs and cats, causes damage to the gum, bone, and tissue around the teeth.  Toxins from periodontal disease are absorbed into the dog's blood stream and can cause infections.  This can lead to more serious health problems, potentially damaging kidney, heart, and brain tissue.

Pet Dental Health Care is important to pets overall health
Poor oral health in pets can lead to serious health issues

Pets taking medications are especially prone to dental health issues.  They can develop very bad breath and may have more plaque, which can lead to serious oral health issues.

Oratene® Brushless Pet Dental Care products can help improve your dog's oral health!

This post is sponsored by Oratene® and the BlogPawsTM Pet Influencer Network™. I am being compensated to help share information about Oratene brushless pet oral care products for Pet Dental Health Month, but we only share information we feel is relevant to our readers. Oratene is not responsible for the content of this article.

Oratene's line of Brushless Pet Oral Health Products  make it easy to kill harmful bacteria and germs, and remove plaque biofilm in your dog's mouth.  Their products break down plaque and biofilm, and specifically target the harmful odor causing bacteria and microorganisms in the mouth. It freshens your dog's breath while maintaining a healthy oral ecology.

Oratene products are especially beneficial for senior pets, pets with special health conditions like Diabetes, and pets who are taking medications for behavior, pain, allergies, heart problems, thyroid dysfunction, or urinary incontinence.

Many pets taking medication can experience a change in the quality of saliva.  Although pets may still have saliva and drool, this condition is called "Dry Mouth".  Pets with chronic Dry Mouth develop severe halitosis (very bad breath), and accumulate plaque which can lead to tartar and tooth decay.

Oratene's line of Pet Dental Care products restores oral balance, reduces harmful bacteria & yeast, and dissolves plaque biofilm.

One of the products in their line of pet dental care products is the Oratene Water Additive.  It's a flavorless concentrate you add to your pet's water each day that provides a safe, healthy way to conveniently keep teeth clean without brushing!

Oratene Water Additive provides brushless oral health care for pets

HOW DOES ORATENE WATER ADDITIVE WORK?

> Oratene Water Additive contains two patented, natural enzyme systems, the LP3 Enzyme System and the MD2 Enzyme System (Mutanase + Dextranase).

> These enzymes inhibit harmful odor-causing bacteria and remove plaque biofilm.  The LP3 Enzyme System destroys bacteria and fungal microorganisms while restoring the oral balance in a pet's mouth.  The MD2 Enzyme System makes plaque water soluble and unable to bind to the teeth.

IS ORATENE WATER ADDITIVE SAFE FOR MY PETS?

> Oratene Water Additive does NOT contain any CHLORHEXIDINE, XYLITOL, ALCOHOL, OR CHLORINE COMPOUNDS, so it's safe for dogs and cats to use daily!

Oratene Water Additive
was great news for me.  I've had a hard time trying to brush Icy and Phoebe's teeth.   I tried really hard to brush their teeth.  I read how-to articles, I watched videos, but it was such a struggle trying to brush their teeth.  It was becoming so unpleasant for them, and for me, that I just gave up.

2 PUMPS OF ORATENE WATER ADDITIVE IN 4 CUPS OF WATER - THAT'S IT!

I've been looking for an effective way to clean their teeth without stressing them out.  Although my dogs don't take medication and don't have "Dry Mouth", they are both showing signs of deteriorating dental health.  Oratene's Water Additive is perfect for us!  I've been  using it for a few weeks now and it's great.  It's so easy and convenient to use and the dog's don't even notice it's in their water.  Their breath doesn't stink so much anymore either!

If your dog is taking medication, or if you just want to improve their oral hygiene and bad breath, give Oratene Water Additive a try.

Note: According to Oratene, the Water Additive can be used with a pet water fountain however "the filter MUST be taken out or it will remove the active compounds and it will plug up the filter."

Oratene Pet Dental Care Products are available at Petco stores and other retailers, as well as from Veterinarians.

We would love to try the drops and will be on the lookout for the toothpaste.

Good dental care is so important. Daily brushing is key along with a great diet. Thanks for the informative article.

I love putting the drops in the water, a stressful way of cleaning Layla's teeth

I did not know that there was a water additive you could give pets to help with their teeth. My cats don't like me to look at their gums or teeth, so I can't imagine brushing them. I will have to check out Oratene

Great post and thanks for sharing the message. I'm always amazed at how few pet parents realise the impact poor dental health has on overall health. Although many animals aren't going to love having their teeth brushed, there are others things that can make a difference. Red won't let me near her with a toothbrush so I wrap gauze around my finger and put some tooth gel on it. She doesn't love it but at least I can get the job done.

Thank you for sharing this information. I received a sample of this product but was intimidated to use it.

The reason why I didn't feel comfortable using it was that I didn't know the process for a multi dog household. The other reason is we have a dog bowl with a reservoir, its the heyrex torus bowl. I don't know how much to add, or if I'd need to use a different bowl.

If you have any input, I'd love to know. Yoda refuses to let us brush his teeth, so I've been trying to find an alternative.

I have heard some great things about Oratene. I try and brush the Goldens teeth often but I think this would be great when I'm short on time and I think they'd prefer this over a toothbrush any day! lol I had no idea that pets taking medication are prone to periodontal disease! Thanks for sharing that!

I've used brushless products before with pets that refuse to let me brush their teeth. The one I used was a spray. The water one might be good for those pets who also refuse to let me spray them.

I love this. Something that helps pet parents who simply can't brush their pets' teeth. If I tried brushing mine they would bite me ND leave home.

This is inspired!

I brush Mr. N's teeth everyday but small dogs are prone to having such bad teeth that I'm always looking for things to add!

We do anesthetic free dental only. Fly someone in from another Province (not legal here in Quebec). At 3.5 pounds anesthesia is just way to risky if avoidable. He does super well and he gets his teeth done 2-3 times a year. Just like me! We brush his teeth 2 times a day as well. So far for a Chihuahua of nearly 7 I am happy to say ... we have not lost a tooth yet!

Wow there's a lot of info about dog dental care this month. I don't brush my dog's teeth, but a water additive might work - as long as it's ok for cats too because she drinks from the same water.

Dental health is easy to overlook, but we shouldn't! I'm glad that this is helping your dogs.

We here at FiveSibes so agree that Pet Dental Health is so important! We brush and three of my Sibes have had professional cleanings, too. I will have to look into Oratene. Thanks for the review! Pinning to share!

I'm a fan of oral pet products that don't contain any of the harmful ingredients you mentioned above. Dental hygiene is a responsibility we must adhere to as pet parents. Thanks for sharing.

It is mega important to engage with your dog and do his or her teeth. I am so glad you are blogging this topic. I know that nightly brushing has prevented us from ever needing a professional cleaning. Thanks for letting pet parents know.

We've tried the water additive and I think it does help. Dental health is so important and prevention is always the best option!

Two of my six kitties have very stinky breath! I'm definitely going to look into these products, and we would love to win some of the water additive! Love that it is safe for both cats and dogs, since we have both and they share a water dish.

Lola The Rescued Cat said...

I definitely need this for my girls. Lexy has the beginning of gingivitis and tartar build up, and I cannot brush her teeth unless I sit on her! MOL Lola could use a breath mint from time to time.

I'm using the water additive daily and I just started using the brushless toothpaste too. I'm so relieved because I've been unable to successfully brush their teeth. I'll keep trying but this is so great to have.

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

Pet dental care definitely is super important. I haven't been able to successfully brush their teeth but I'll keep trying. I'm glad you enjoyed the post, thanks Tonya!

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

It's definitely a stress Free way to help clean their teeth. Especially when you can't successfully brush pets' teeth every day.

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

Neither did I! I'm so happy to have this product now. I've been trying to brush my dogs' teeth but have been unsuccessful so this really helps.

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

Thank you Hindy, I'm so glad you liked my post! It is amazing that people don't know the linkages between pet dental health & overall health, I can't imagine Veterinarians don't explain it. It's important to continually communicate the message.

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

That is an interesting question about having a reservoir pet water fountain. Does it continually fill up with new water or does it circulate the existing water? If it circulates, then depending on how much water is in the fountain add Oratene Water Additive accordingly. It's fine to add more than 2 pumps if there's more than 4 cups of water in the fountain. I spoke with a rep at Oratene and they advised that if there is a charcoal filter in your fountain it should be removed, otherwise the water additive's ingredients would be filtered out and it won't be effective. Thanks so much for asking this question Bryn! Great question.

Oratene was formerly the Biotene product which I've used since I was a kid so I trust the brand. I can't brush my dogs' teeth so this is great for us. They don't even taste anything in the water! I didn't know that pet meds can cause an imbalance in a pet's saliva and lead to dental disease either, that was such a surprise. I hope you entered my contest so you can give it a try!

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

LOL! I don't think my dogs would like a spray either, they don't like me touching their mouths much; I can touch Phoebe's mouth but Icy is a pain with it. I like this product, it's just so easy & convenient.

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

Thanks Marjorie! I really like it too, wrestling with the pooches was getting old, LOL! It's a great solution for us.

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

You're so lucky that you can brush his teeth daily, that's fantastic - I'm so jealous!! Phoebe is a small dog and she definitely has issues with her teeth. This is an easier solution, I was feeling so guilty about not being able to brush her teeth, she wrestles me with it too much!

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

That is SO great! I'm envious that you can actually brush your dog's teeth, how wonderful. I have tried really hard but they just hate it so much. Anesthesia is the reason I don't want to have my senior dog Phoebe get her teeth cleaned. I'm hoping the water additive plus dental chews will help her.

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

Yup! February is Pet Dental Health month so it's a great way to both remind and educate about the importance of pet dental health and linkages between poor pet dental health and more serious health problems. Yes, Oratene is safe for both dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens.

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

It sure is easy to overlook! I love that I can fill up their water bowl each morning and just add two pumps, it's so simple.

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

It really is critical, poor dental health can lead to other serious health problems such as organ failure. You're so fortunate to be able to brush the Sibes' teeth! Thank you so much for sharing!

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

Same here, I don't want to use anything that could be harmful to my dogs! Dental health is definitely a pet owner responsibility.

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

I'm so jealous at how well Dexter takes to teeth brushing! I wish I could get the hang of it. You have such great information and video on your blog about how to brush dogs' teeth. I'm not giving up, I will certainly still continue trying to brush their teeth but this is a great solution for us. I don't have to feel so guilty about not being able to brush! Oratene water additive also gets in between teeth where brushes may miss so even when I do master the art of brushing I'll probably still use this as extra protection.

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

It's a great solution when you can't brush your pet's teeth daily!

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

Oh that's great! I really love this as an option when you can't seem to find success in the teeth brushing area.

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

Stank breath is the worst! Oratene actually helped with their stinky breath almost immediately, I'm thrilled with that. It is safe for dogs, cats, puppies, & kittens too. I'm so glad you entered our contest, thank you!

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

LOL!! Well we can't have you sitting on poor Lola, can we? This is definitely a great option when you can't brush a pet's teeth. It started helping our dogs bad breath almost immediately! That alone makes it worth using, LOL!

Swift said...

I have a morkie, but he tends to drink from my cats bowl. Read your reply that this product is ok for both cats and dogs. Thank goodness!

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

LOL! I had a cat that insisted on drinking from the dogs' bowl. I think it was her way of letting them know who was Really boss! Oratene is safe and beneficial for both cats and dogs so you'll be fine using it!

Sandra L. Granahan said...

How long does it take to start seeing results after starting to use Oratene? Thanks

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

For me, my dogs' bad breath diminished very quickly. In terms of removing plaque and biofilm it begins working right away, but as for visible results I think it depends on the individual pet and how bad the buildup is.

The Daily Pip said...

I'm definitely going to give this a try - too bad I missed the giveaway! Also, glad to know that it is safe for cats and dogs as Ruby and Rosie and Moo Shu share water bowls.

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

Actually, you didn't miss the giveaway, you were the first person who entered when you helped me test it! Sorry you didn't win, it was a random drawing. It is definitely safe for all 3 to use and share a water bowl! Thanks again for helping me test out the giveaway Kristin.
